I have a PowerEdge 750 with a P4 2.4 single core and 2GB RAM. It is functioning as my BGP Edge Router. I have had these servers running RouterOS for a long time and RouterOS is so tiny it will run in RAM.

Correct, it is single core. Being Linux I expect multiple cores help,
being as it is more ps based (opposed to Windows being thread based).

The P4 is a single core, right?

Any time you can get multiple cores working, mult-threaded things just
work better. We have had good luck with a core i5 (2500), which has 4
cores. Very snappy, and multi-threading works great.

I'm looking at a new x86 router. My 3 CPU options are:

Pentium 4 631 3.0G
E4300 Core2Duo 1.8 GHz
E6400 Core2Duo 2.13

My old one has the P4. Is there any reason to go up to the Core2Duo in
terms of performance gain?
