Cobalt adds ASP solutions
March 23, 2000 (Internet.com) -- Cobalt Networks Inc. took steps Thursday to
bridge the gap between Linux and Unix and Active Server Pages with the
acquisition of Chili!Soft Inc. for about $70 million in stock.
Cobalt (COBT) will exchange 1.15 million common shares for all outstanding
Chili!Soft equity. The deal is expected to close next quarter.
Chili!Soft makes tools that allow Active Server Pages to run in a Linux and
Unix environment. The company also supports a number of popular Web servers
and Windows NT.
Active Server Pages are a development of Microsoft Corp. (MSFT). They allow
Web developers to incorporate real-time data and other information specific
to individual users on Web sites.
Steven DeWitt, Cobalt's president and chief executive officer, said the
integration of Chili!Soft's Active Server Pages technology and Cobalt's
server appliances will help bridge the gap between Microsoft development
tools and Linux.
"Microsoft Web tools are the most commonly used tools in the developer
community. This acquisition allows Cobalt to share in the largest pool of
qualified developers and significantly expand the number of positions
available for service providers using the Cobalt platform," he said.
