Subject: Thawte PGP Notary Tour to Visit Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, August 17
The following was also posted to newsgroups, but I have made a few

Bring: Identification (mandatory: passport, driver's license,
or other "official" ID which has a picture of you
as well as your full or legal name; optional:
employee badges, social security cards, credit
cards, or other things with your name on it),
AND a photocopy of this identification for the Thawte
representative to take with him
Thawte user ID (after you go through the registration, you
will get one).
PGP key information (number of bits of the public modulus,
key ID, key fingerprint, and the list of userIDs on the
key which should be signed/certified) on paper!
Thawte Certification, a leading public key Certification Authority
(CA), has confirmed their stop in Atlanta, Georgia, as part of their
North American Notary Tour in which they will certify public keys for
users of the Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) program. This will be done at
no charge (in contrast to other certification activities which charge
for verifying identities and such). In conjunction with Thawte's stop
here in Atlanta to bring PGP keys under their notary system, we will
hold a regular PGP keysigning session for PGP users to be able to
extend the Web of Trust (WoT) by identifying other users and
associating such users with their appropriate public keys.
To participate in the Thawte Freemail Web of Trust, please consult
http://www.thawte.com/certs/personal/wot/contents.html and
http://www.thawte.com/certs/personal/wot/about.html for some background
information. Then you must register yourself, your E-mail addresses,
and your key(s) by enrolling at
http://www.thawte.com/cgi/enroll/personal/step1.exe. They will ask for
rather personal information, but since they are a recognized
Certification Authority, this is not surprising as they must have some
basis to make their assurances about identity to key bindings. Once
you have registered your keys, then you will be able to meet Bruce at
either the Georgia Tech or Marriott Courtyard locations so that he can
verify your identity documents and then attest to your identity and key
relationship. You should also register for the Atlanta sessions by
going to http://www.thawte.com/cgi/personal/wot/find.exe and following
the link for the North American Road Tour for August 1999.
Also happening at the same time will be a regular PGP keysigning
session so that we can link each other to the Web of Trust (all users
can participate, not necessarily just those certified by Thawte). To
get an idea of how this will all go, please see
http://www.herrons.com/kb2nsx/keysign.html for a description of how
some keysigning parties are run. We will try to follow this format as
much as possible; however, how things are actually done will depend on
how many people are present, etc. The first session will last for 4
hours, but probably not everyone who participates will be there for all
4 hours, for instance.
If you are interested in the regular keysigning, it will help move
things along if you will send me your PGP key (both DH and RSA keys
will be accepted, though various participants may not be able to deal
with one or the other, depending on the software versions that they
have). You should send only the userIDs that you want to have
signed/certified by other people. I will gather the keys and print out
a listing of all of them so that we don't all have to be copying key
info at the meeting. After the keysigning, I will provide a keyring
with keys presented at the sessions and can also collect the signed
keys to be made available to the participants or other interested
parties (I can also send them to the keyservers if desired). People
who haven't sent me keys before the event are welcome to attend, but
getting your key info and doing other administrative things will take
some time at the session.
In the directions to the College of Computing Building, there is
mention of visitor parking. Though it will be break week when this
event happens, parking may still be scarce and you may need to use the
visitor lot if there are no spaces close by.
If you have any questions about this event, please reply to this
message with your questions or you can also write [EMAIL PROTECTED]
if you have questions regarding their procedures or requirements.
Peter
