New virus spreads through browsing web sites

Computer Associates (CA) is warning PC users about a new type of virus that
can infect systems simply through browsing web sites.

Called Win32/H4.1852, the virus has not yet been found in the wild but CA
says that PC users should still seek protective measures to combat the
virus in case it is released. "Even though this particular virus isn't
significantly damaging by itself, it is representative of a disturbing new
mechanism in virus distribution, where the malicious payload is not in the
initial virus/trojan. It is important that clients are aware of the latest
trends in virus threats," said Simon Perry, business manager of CA security.

CA says that infection occurs when a user browses a web page with Microsoft
Internet Explorer on a machine with Windows scripting host installed and
Internet security settings set too low. The virus payload is created by a
VBScript routine that can be embedded in any HTML page. The virus generates
a debug script and batch files that, when executed, create additional files
that infect the system.

Unlike viruses such as Melissa, which use e-mail as a distribution
mechanism, this virus distributes itself by directing a user's web browser
to a web page that contains the virus.
