Hallo lagi semuanya.
Di bawah ini ada artikel yang saya temukan berkenaan dengan topik 'Flash is
Evil' yang sempat dan sedang diangkat ke permukaan belakangan ini. Semoga
bermanfaat.

This is the intro I gave in a recent debate concerning Flash design on the
web
today. The debate was held at the Jacob Javitz center in
New York City, October
23rd.
"Flash is Evil"...and other ridiculous statements
Hello, my name is Hillman Curtis. I believe the most
attractive quality the web has to offer
is its propensity for constant change. I believe the web
is defined by a collective
intelligence and cannot be dictated by any one person,
group or set of ideas.
The design shop I run here in NYC does a lot of Flash
work, but we also do a lot of html
based web design, and we'll do quite a bit of Broadcast
and Film Design, so I'm a pretty
well rounded member of the web design community....but
right now, I believe the most
original and innovative design work is coming from the
Flash design community. And
certainly while Flash isn't the perfect tool for every
job, it is the best multimedia tool out
there.
While doing some research for this talk I came upon an
article titled "Flash is Evil" and
thought it to be comically short sighted...so I went
back in time and collected a few
similarly short sighted quotes that I could use as the
map for this introduction. The point
being that in any environment of change there is always
a faction who in their rush to find
fault in the change or to impose some structure to the
chaos overlook the possibilities of
that change.
"This Telephone has too many shortcomings to be
seriously considered as a
means of communication" -western union memo 1876
Much has been said and written about the shortcomings of
Flash and the Flash design
community... but I want to point out that in my
experience with forward media this is a
recognizable pattern. Remember that when the computer
came on the scene with
desktop publishing and later with web design,
traditional graphic designers were
lambasting "bad design" and their battle cry was "now
anyone can buy a computer and
call themselves a designer" and now with Flash anyone
can call themselves a designer,
an interface designer, and animator, a programmer, and a
motion designer. It's a
bottomless tool and that's scary to a lot of people and
ofcourse with a tool that has all of
these capabilities you are going to get a lot of
irresponsible...I won't say bad...design. And
I don't use the term bad design, because it is too easy
and it closes you off from seeing
possible useful innovations hidden in that reckless
design. With any New media there's
going to be criticism...and a lot of warranted
criticism, especially with the web since with
desktop publishing you had relatively limited exposure
of the work, where as with the web
everyone can see it.
"Who wants to hear actors talk" -H.M Warner, Warner
Brothers, 1927
H.M. Warner was head of Warner Brothers Studios and in
an environment of change
when he said this. Movies were silent and doing just
fine as far as he was
concerned...why change it? So who wants to hear the web
talk? Who wants to see it
move? Well quite a few actually...in fact most of my
clients do. The web can be a dry
place, I believe there's room for the human voice, I
believe there's room for music and I
strongly believe there's room for motion. At my shop
we're always saying "Motion is the
Message" and that means that the way you choose to move
an element can communicate
as much as the element itself. We use Flash to make the
web talk and to make it move. At
the root of everything we do, all of us on the web, is
the need to communicate, and with
Flash we are able to employ audio and motion to
hopefully encourage our audience to
feel as well as comprehend.
"Computers are Useless, They Only Give you
Answers" -Pablo Picasso
....well...the same could be said for the web by
some...the web is useless it only gives you
answers...but that's really not the case and again a
huge agent of this is the Flash design
community. The web is a wide open medium and again
capable of things no one can
imagine or attempt to control. Telling stories on the
web is huge, but many people contend
that no one really reads on the web, they just scan the
ends of paragraphs. Is the web a
suitable place for compelling narrative? I think it is,
and my proof is simple that people are
doing it. Cartoons, animation, and narratives in a
filmic style are, for me, making the web
a richer medium.
"Far too noisy, my dear Mozart. Far too many
notes" -Emperor Ferdinand after the
first performance of The Marriage Of Figaro
This sums up the criticism of a lot of Flash and I am
often amongst those criticizing. We
have all sat through the endless Flash "skip
intro"...hell, up until 6 months ago I was still
designing them...but they're ripe for ridicule...far too
many bells far too many whistles...far
too little meaning. Flash is not the right tool for
every job, and you are going to get a lot of
"wow" design with any tool this powerful. Flash is one
of those rare tools that provide a
common platform for both designers and programmers...and
anyone who has worked
with either knows that they can be the most creative,
forward thinking, obstinate, rule
bashing and...most important...innovative individuals on
the planet. And that to me is
exciting. I have always been attracted to those who are
willing to push envelopes,
because they are willing to be ridiculed in their effort
to create something truly original. I
believe the web is an open medium, I believe it needs
innovation like we need air. I
believe Flash mirrors the environment it was designed
for in so many ways...but
encouraging, attracting... demanding innovation is the
strongest commonality of the two.
