My rule of thumb (which I more or less sucked out of thin air...) is:
- Maximum of 1 slave for every 20MB of RAM. So 2GB would be 100 slaves.
- Around 2-3 Sendmail children per slave before you start having problems.
You can let the system run for a while and then run:
md-mx-ctrl histo
to see how many slaves are actually required.
