So maybe I should just install the new one over the existing version, saving local changes done in 'mimedefang-filter'?
Before modifying the stock filter, I make a copy called mimedefang-filter.original. When it comes time to upgrade, I can diff my current filter against the original stock one, then apply the changes to the new stock one.
