I doubt it's a clamd issue; clam is pretty fast.  Decreasing the size
of attachments clamd scans would help one thing---it would help you
get infected by viruses. :-)

Really, you should increase the timeouts in Sendmail's configuration file.
(i.e., increase the "T=..." equates in the INPUT_MAIL_FILTER directive.)
