One last email on this topic. bz2/gz/zip attachments still caused the mail system to throw a fit, so I updated clamv to the latest development version (clamav-devel-20041010) and not only did the attachment get processed properly, but I was able to re-instate embedded perl !!!
It looks like it was a clamv issue all along, but I'm still mystified as to what fixed it.
