Does anyone know if there are legitimate mailers that connect

None that we've seen. Once in a great while (once a month?) some
host will do this one time, but sends correctly many times before
and after. I don't know what that means. One had sendmail 8.12,
from what the host said at port 25, but maybe some other software
on the same host opened the bad connection, who knows.

On the other hand this check does not catch very much either. Since
sendmail can do this so efficiently we've stayed with it.
