That won't work, because you have no idea which slave runs filter_tick. Much better to fix the broken MySQL behaviour; there's no reason to shut down a TCP connection just because it's idle. You also should (as Jan Cornet recommended) have a wrapper function that tests if your DB handle is OK, and if not, reopens it. Otherwise, if you restart the MySQL server for any reason, your MIMEDefang slaves will be hopelessly confused.
