This might be a long shot, but we had an experience where other software on the box, doing periodic updates, was pushing the load so high and slowing it down so much that Mimedefang would time out. It appeared to be a Mimedefang problem, but it was not. When we finally asked, what else was happening during those minutes, then we found what it was. Most of the time we had plenty of cpu and swap-- but not at those moments.
