Try updating your Perl interpreter. 5.8.8 is years out of date. 5.12.3 is the current release.
5.8.8 is the version available for the widely-deployed RHEL5 and its respins.
RHEL6 was only recently released and CentOS 6 isn't out yet, so it's gonna be awhile before a newer Perl is widely deployed in Red Hat shops.
