Thanks David, it wasn't in the filter.
If it helps anyone in the future, the lack of "Unix::Syslog" meant (I
presume) that there was output sent into the socket that should not have
been. After installing the missing module all is fine.
Naturally the "working" server *did* have Unix::Syslog installed.
