How should a MUA react to a tempfail? Prompt the user to keep trying?
Keep trying by itself? (Then you've implemented half of an MTA.)

Submission servers should do their best not to tempfail, IMO.

I have literally just finished a cup of coffee, and what David wrote makes sense. You're right.

The client could possibly save to an outbox and tell the user to try later... but that's not very good. Permanent fail is a significant difference to a client.
