In Styx, files are transferred in chunks: the client says "Give me the first 8KB", then the server responds with the first chunk of data, then the client says "Give me the next 8KB" and so forth. This back-and-forth nature of the protocol means that a lot of small messages get exchanged, and so file transfers are slower than simply opening up a stream connection. If there's any way of "tuning" MINA for this application I'd be interested to hear it.
