There is the dependency issue plus a potential efficiency issue. The
java.util.concurrent.atomic package provides atomic operations (via native
code) and in the backport these are emulated (using sychronisation etc.).
There are also some low level helper classes (e.g. LockSupport) that are
not present in the backport. The atomic utilities plus the low level
helpers are used in the higher level classes such as the collections.

There's no much difference between thw two packages both in features and
completeness. The one difference is that backported one is very easy to
migrate later.
More bigger question is about adding another dependency to MINA.
