Dear Gruff, I think you can already find the answer in Shakespeare's 'Merchant of Venice'. The combination of greed, present in every culture, and the total lack of respect for other cultures preached by the torah, made some Jews to be extremely cruel in business. I told already, except the rich ones I know here in Antwerp, I knew some less rich ones in Amsterdam and Brussels. And their attitude against me was quite different from what I suffered here. They got an own place to bury from the town. But they bought another one in the Netherlands, nearby the Flemish border. Why the Antwerp Jewish community acts so? Such things I mean when I say, some of them, especially their own press here, cherrish this feeling oppressed, what is not always right. The unanswered question seems to be why. Why have the jews more than any other people or culture been so reviled, hated, shunned, exiled and killed throughout almost three thousand years of history. For years I didn't care but that was for personal reasons. I felt deeply hurt by my father's family because what they did was because they were jews. But I eventually outgrew that and started searching for the reason why jews have suffered so much. To be honest, I have no idea and except for the hate driven radicals I can find no reasons why ... none I can support in anything close to the scientific method. But I do have my opinions and I mostly believe it has to do with wealth. At least a couple of the ancient jewish holy books are among the best courses in business management and finance. What little of translations I've found show that much of these texts gets into the fine details of men doing business with each other. Over centuries this sort of acumen grew until jews became masters of business and finance. From what little research I've done, it seems the jews -- whether from the diaspora or whatever reason -- have spread out among the nations of the earth and settled down where they found a welcoming community. Then it seems a few years down the road, because of their financial and business acument, the jews in each of these communities owned many of the businesses and were the primary money lenders. This of course frightened the local non-jewish population and eventually led to the jews being castigated and cast our wherever they were.
