Chaz - there are other examples, but I only have cursory knowledge.
Marshal Sahlins wrote a book years back called "Stone Age Economics",
drawing a lot on the Maussian concept of the gift and exchange value
and primitive trade.  I used to formulate sci-fi stories based on
tribal attitudes and then give students info on the real tribes - one
classic was a tribe that treated leaders openly with contempt and
derision (maybe we should both get DNA tests on this one mate!).
