I'd still hold most of us hold we were duped by God, possibly
traumatised by that point in childhood where the realisation of what
Gruff says dawns.  Trauma here is a bit like PTSD in which it is
probably impossible to bottom the grim source of abuse.  My keyboard
seems to have developed a mind of its own - words and symbols I don't
type are appearing and the wrong ones delete ... back after virus
check.
