So fran, your question above about teaching ethics...I'm assuming this is one reason you mentioned Plato et al?
As interesting as the way he treats the topic, I'm not convinced of the truthfulness of his presentations. >From the start, I will share that for me, there is a learned behavior… mostly consisting of Pavlovian methodology. This would be a reactive sort of ‘morality’. Some of this area could be self recognized based upon trial and error. However, again we are talking about pure pragmatism here. And, all of this basket of morality will have to be addressed when seeing how it works in society. I do want to point out that it is my understanding that there is an innate moral sense too. This could be addressed here philosophically perhaps. But for now I merely wish to lay out some of the landscape as best as I can. I do invite those with greater insights to share their world too even if it is obvious that it differs. I’m not sure there will be any right/ wrong when it comes to these issues.
