As far as others' works go, I'll chip in for Poe's The Raven as a
timeless classic. Also Shakespeare's sonet that starts, "Let me not,
to the marriage of true minds," is a favourite of mine.
Although I MAY have posted it before, I'm quite fond of this one of
mine. Technically, it's a kind of sonnet, but its metre is more epic-
like (iambic heptameter rather than pentameter) and, of course, it's
also a brief play with the players being Odin and the Norns. There
are LOADS of literary devices in it (alliteration in places, pun in
the title, tense changing for each Norn, all lines end with a long-
vowel sound and all long vowel sounds are used, etc.). Hope you
enjoy!!
Norn’s Law: The Meaning O’Laf
Odin:
Gather ye round, the principles of black and white and grey
We taught them then, we'll teach them when we teach them all today.
Urd:
The black's been burnt and fouled and wretch'd and evil some might
say;
But black's what gave the depth to life, its ups its downs its sway.
Without the dark, the light couldst blind and eyes no longer see
The pains and joys of births and deaths and hap’nin’s out at sea.
Skuld:
The white is clean and bright and shines and sparkles in thine eye;
It gives us hope and promise true and tells us, ‘Good, is why’.
In truth, this pureness is the same as black's alter ego.
The grey now comes to let you know, sans her, where would we go?
Verdandi:
For grey is why we live and die and tarry in betwee',
This argent steel is basis for the stuff of you and me.
Odin:
Until you've seen life's story through and stand in Heimdall's queue,
You'll not know white from black from grey from this brief overview.
