The latter leads to the former, these days...

Most naturally occurring psychoactive substances only enhance or mimic
naturally occuring chemicals in our brains. DMT, Cannabinoids,
Dopamine, the like...this is one place where science has long been
behind religion...BECAUSE of religion. Moralists decry the
artificially enhanced pleasures, and shape the social more, which in
turn shapes the research.
