Checkers can be a pretty serious game if played by the rule, "you 'have to' take a jump". Growing up we played you had to take a jump or loose the man. I later learned the Rule with serious players, and the strategy. Rather than just going after individuals you give away a piece or two setting up three of four jumps at a time. The offering of a single man for that effort will start a fight.
