I think this may be the only thing about professional writing that Rigsy and
I actually agree on. Seek encouragement from your close friends and family,
but don't necessarily expect the kind of criticism you really need. Unless
you're very lucky.

If you don't have any contacts to call upon to critique your work, then look
for a local writing group, or a creative writing class (even if the class
isn't much help, the contacts/support will be). If you're a hermit for
whatever reason, there's plenty of writer groups on the Internet. One of the
better ones is Hatrack, which is part of Orson Scott Card's website.
Whatever you think of the man -- and I personally don't think very much --
his writer's forum is very good and very active.

Make sure you follow the submission rules, however. It's all quite strict.
