I think most people in ME have a fine sense of humour, which becomes quite evident during the course of peaceful debate. However, when under attack or confronted by a bullying attitude, this humour can be supplanted by a well honed defence mechanism, typically presented in a reasonable tone. Yes, humourless dialogue often transpires here, but hey, there are serious issues to be debated, although few threads are totally devoid of humour.
Some posters here portray a humourous attitude, yet as soon as someone disagrees with them, their true nature emerges, sometimes to the point where they resort to verbal attacks and name calling. This is very rare here, but sometimes it raises its ugly head. I know I am guilty of making pointed remarks on occasion, but reserve these responses to those who I feel are being, or have the potential of being, disruptive. This is not a good reason I admit, but I somehow feel the need to protect the room and proceed to divert negativity towards myself in order to do so. I guess this is ingrained in my mediocre cranium because of participation in rooms that were not nearly as capable of defending themselves as this place. Generally, a lot of fun can be had at ME, but if a poster wants to cause waves, not with words, but with attitude, the ammunition to protect the serenity of the pool is limitless. Any theory or opinion is welcome here as long as it is presented without malice and, if the theory is met with opposition, that meaningful dialogue will ensue. We can disagree without going for the jugular. We can even have fun doing so if the atmosphere permits.
