I think that happiness is not the highest virtue as is expressed in the video. It IS a state for our sense of emotions. It is not the core virtue for other major centers of the human being such as our body, our sexual system, our thinking, our spiritual life nor even our transcendental self. Yes, the state of happiness does affect all the other centers just as does the clarification of consciousness does along with other results/states.
I think that some people, the person in the video included, reach a level of being blessed out and, at least for awhile become blinded to other higher states. Some people I have met even became rather evangelical about a state of bliss….well, not exactly a state of bliss …a state of being blessed out..different things. When truth and reality are brought up, even though they are, as I implied above, associated with the whole being, they are at the center of a different part of the psyche…our awareness in particular. So, for clarity’s sake, I prefer not to conflate different centers/realms of being in our discussions. I do agree to some extent that the attachment to happiness can produce suffering. What I have shared from HHDL supports this. And, just simple aphorisms/repetitions about happiness can improve ones emotional life too. We are on the same page with ‘Everyone wants to be happy.’ And, again infusing wisdom onto the mix, yes, there is a point where one apprehends what can be called a causeless happiness. Yes, it appears to have no reason and not to be the result of attaining or finding something and wellbeing does exude. Yet, to reach that goal, besides just grace, specific steps are taken, whether intentionally or not. So, in this sense Molly, I agree with you rather than the words of the person in the video.
