“Is violence pushed on society like cigarettes and alcohol?” – SD No. Violence can be analyzed in numerous ways. One quick observation though is that ‘society’ is imposed on violence.
“Should we continue to allow portrayals of violence on the screen because violence exists?” – SD ‘We’ have no control over it Slip… Unless perhaps one just stops buying from the sponsors of corporate TV. Of course, at that point, we would have to re-implement the terrible item, ‘Public TV’…again….like many other countries do…and ‘we’ couldn’t afford the lobbyists to counter the corporate lobbyists that already exist. “I don't understand why they are making movies and television series based on despicable characterization, it's almost like glorifying the behavior, setting up role models for dummies to identify with. We have lost our sense of abhorrence towards this behavior and are heading in the wrong direction as a society?” – SD The ‘reasons’ again are many. Some are: they are cheap to make…sort of ‘reality TV’ stuff. Also, the more violent, the more the control groups watched and didn’t change the channel. So, such stuff clearly titillates ‘us’. ‘We’, as a society have lost much of the Victorian patina that covered some more base appetites for a long time. My theory is that much of it started with “Dumb and Dumber” and similar arc types. Oh, and don’t forget anti-intellectualism. . . this even though such tendencies have always existed. See Plato. “I'm not sure that we will ever be able to weed out the violent behavior that is inherent in our species.” – SD Slip, it would take the use of a divine scalpel to ‘weed out’ said behavior, no? And, cynical as the view is, many people thrive on such behavior, from the corporate sponsors to the media to you tube to…say, the legal system, courts, police, privatized jails, Taser manufacturers, other munitions makers and salesmen, psychiatrists, doctors, undertakers, manufacturers of caskets etc. It is no accident that such behavior just IS.
