Gratitude is so close to guilt (the "guilt of internal conflict", Freud) that, psychologically, it makes no difference. The evolutionary basis for gratitude is pretty well understood, Trivers talks about reciprocal altruism for example. You can see examples in nature, like cleaner fish.
