As a psychoanalyst my perspective is that the experience of past lives is probably accurate but in the following way.
All experience that a person registers as significant appears to be imprinted on the "record" of one's personal history. However there are many reasons as to why the memory of a given experienced is "forgotten" but may be re - stirred up in the person's future. This is a key theory underlying the mysteries associated with post traumatic stress syndrome. It is also the explanation for de je vue and positive and negative transference. Proust writes brilliantly of this in his work Remembrance of Things particularly Volume I Swans Way.
