Our politicians are corrupt, this is the nature of both socialist/ communist systems and democratic/mob rule systems. A common saying in regards to Canada vs. American legislature is that the Canadian system is made for angels and American for demons. What this means is that the American system prevents against abuse while the Canadian assumes no abuse. Sadly, both have moved toward each other to the degree that neither can exist without almost perfectly similar problems. Some people want an American dictatorship, one in which there are no term limits. This would correspond to an immediate revolution, term limits protect people from government officials whereas the other protects officials from the public. This is especially scary considering we just witnessed the first president elected solely by media presentation and protection.
The concept of trusting politicians is a funny one. I trust them to want re-election. I trust them to do what they are told by whatever organisation they swear fealty to. I do not trust them to go against the machine unless the circumstance is dire or they are privy to knowledge of the oppositions eventual defeat. Civil rights is a good example. The racists were and are defeated whether or not the foot still twitches. Homophobes will face the same fate and be regarded just as lowly eventually. A less corrupt and less dependent politician will take the matter to it's inevitable conclusion, however, Obama promised to do so and therefore we know it won't be him. His word is worth less than a declaration of Pat Robertsons character.
