I was for all practical purposes an atheist between the ages of about 8 and 54, I'm now 57 (going on 58), and as you can imagine, my views are only gradually changing. I grew up in Northern Ireland, where I conceived a detestation and contempt for organised religion which has never left me. I have also seen and experienced at first hand how unthinkably irrational, inhuman, involuntarily sado-masochistic, and unrelentingly abusive the religious mind can be. (I have many stories to tell, just no tongue to tell them!) Does that help?
