Assuming all things under the sun have purpose and are meaningful, (Antithesis of Ecclesiastes) there is no fair or unfair. The loss of a life to us is sad enough! For someone as intelligent as you are, I don't see how you could have missed that. Perhaps you may have over analyzed what was being expressed.
