Okay, Don, I haven't been able to verify this, but if my magpie-like
memory serves me correctly, Giulio de Giuliano de Medici, having been
elected Pope Clement VII in 1523 is reported to have said, "Now that
we are pope, let us enjoy it." Unfortunately, his political ineptness
led to the sack of Rome by the mostly Lutheran soldiers serving the
(Catholic) Emperor, Charles V. His subsequent dependence on Charles
forced him to refuse to dissolve the marriage between Charles' sister,
Catherine of Aragon and her husband, Henry VIII of England. The result
of THAT was the beginning of the English reformation.

Now there's a man who could have used political advisors with the
acumen of Ms. Palin ... like ... OMG! :-)
