Happy Holi Everyone. I asked an Indian lady friend just what was the holiday was..i would like to share her answer with the group.
Holi - the festival of colours (implying renewal, invigoration). It is a time for rejoicing and enthusiastic celebration, much merry-making. It is a festival of sharing (generosity) what has been harvested and to welcome the spring season, the season of love. New leaves and flowers appear on trees (signifying renewal). The essence of Holi festival is acknowledging and joyous celebration of the spirit of oneness (cohesion, harmony), of equality, of unity in diversity, and to reset and renew... submerging all unpleasantness and prejudice. Holi [also] has a special musical flavour. Originally, Holi was regarded as a festival to celebrate good harvest and fertility of the land. Holi also celebrates the triumph of good over malevolence, of light over darkness (ignorance and regressive aspects/values/mindsets), the forces of good (dharma) triumphs over the forces of adharma (ignorance, myopia and malevolence), it is also about cleansing one's mind and heart. ... People, irrespective of age, play with colours, applying dry colours and splashing coloured water on each other. Earlier organic colours were used. This had a positive effect on the skin and on the environment.
