  Sorry, I have asked and received an answer to this question before.  I did 
have a try at this mailing lists archive but couldn't find it there.  I use 
MSYS and had to pass an argument to configure to get a library to build 32-bit 
or 64-bit libraries.  I would like to know what these arguments are?

The arguments are:
for 32-bit:

  --host=i686-w64-mingw32

for 64-bit:

  --host=x86_64-w64-mingw32
