This really has nothing to do with MSYS, though I do encourage using
Cygwin over it on Windows.

This is about the Perl interpreter and Symlink-in-tarball problem.

It is a symlink, you wouldn't expect it to work on Windows/MSYS. Cygwin
on the otherhand would be fine, the tarball was made in Cygwin.

I have no plans to make a version without Perl threads, mostly because
it involves rebuilding the interpreter itself without threading support.

iirc Perl 5.8 for MSYS is out, you could try to persuade the maintainers
to make it threaded.
