I am seeing some really weird things happen. I am going to get back to you on
this when I can wrap my head around what's going on.
right now I don't have exactly a clue. unit tests on a string works, on a file
works, running the overall program on a collection of files locks up in just
this one function that "looks perfect" but just doesn't work (the usual problem
for me).
usually I think it's my code and I have done something erroneous - and I
usually have. but sometimes I find wonderful ways of breaking things...
I thought it was in the file I/O, but now I am not so sure having done some
unit tests with file I/O.
