Thanks for your reply and advice. My mistake was to only select those 
components of the package mingw-w64 that target the w64 architecture.

Now that I've installed the full package "mingw-w64", I could see that 
x86_64-w64-mingw32-gcc has indeed been installed in /usr/bin.
