Instead of installing "build-essentials" from Debian repositories, I installed 
the package "make". I re-cross-compiled openssl and it proceeded without 
errors. The message was "Configured for mingw64".

Sorry, I do not understand what you meant by "the list of things to change is 
long...". Were you referring to the security fixes for OpenSSL?
