I would also like to add that the apparent "solution" presented here https://sourceforge.net/p/mingw-w64/bugs/413/?page=1 (i.e. disabling anti-virus software such as AVG) does not seem to work reliably - I use Microsoft Security Essentials which I've tried disabling during installation and I still got the same error.
