Well ... this 5.3.0 i686 compiler can be run in 64-bit mode - ie the "-m64" switch is not a fatal error, but it *is* a fatal error with the 4.x.x i686 compilers. Is this change in i686 behaviour from 4.x.x to 5.3.0 expected and accepted ? As regards gmp's configure process, I think it simply detects that "-m64" is permitted, and therefore runs with it.
