In an offlist discussion about the problems with gmp, it was suggested to me that this new behaviour with 5.3.0 was added for cross-compilation capability. It would be good to receive confirmation from the experts. (Incidentally, specifying ABI=32 to configure provides a good fix to that gmp problem.)
