Some more findings

Hi Ruben,
I have installed it and find it is really cool!
It runs with the 2.6 kernel, although there are some smaller problem
reports during boot. And, of course the touchpad buttons don't work.
But double tap of the touch is recognized.
What I am not sure from my first experiments is the Ethernet or WiFi
connection. If that works, I may be able to try the debootstrap
right on this machine.
Although there is a menu item "Wifi up", iwconfig or ifconfig don't
show a working interface. This again may be a 2.4 -> 2.6 config issue.
What also does not work is usb (but that may be a change in 2.4 ->
2.6 configuration)
Yes. USB devices are recognized by the kernel (show up in dmesg) but
don't get through to user space...
Now I can again try to externally install the first phase lenny on the
same sd card, and run a chroot second phase on this hybrid system. If
that works better than before, I could finally end up in a
bootstrapped lenny chroot where basic config and kernel matches...
Or we could try to manually bring up Ethernet or WiFi...

Nikolaus
