Yes, there is no other way.  The SoC (at least the 4740, I don't know
the details about the 4730) has an ac'97 and i2s controller, which makes
it possible to connect external devices of those types to the SoC.  In
addition, it has an internal i2s codec.  This means that unless you have
an external ac'97 codec, you must use the i2s interface to get any
sound.  Or at least that's what I understand of the programmer's manual.
