You are correct - there are plans to have a separate Collaborative Editor, so
it might indeed be worth basing both off the same framework.
My questions for the meeting are:
- whether separating the two Utilities is simply duplication of the same
feature with different functionality, and
- whether it might make more sense to integrate the functionality of a
collaborative editor into the Notes Utility, so that when the user is Online it
is collaborative (involving real-time fuzzy diffs, etc.) and when the user is
Offline it is non-collaborative (which is where manual conflict handling comes
in).
Obviously, to integrate the functionality of both into one Utility would make
it MUCH more complicated to implement the Notes Utility, but it might make more
sense to the end-user. Otherwise, they might think: what is the point in having
two Utilities which perform the same basic thing (text editing) in two
different ways?
