OK, thanks for the problem analysis and first draft of a fix.
You were fully correct, but I could solve it reusing existing
code for a similar problem when multiple files were globbed
(the many-backslashes issue), with no further regressions.

I also updated both manpage and mailing list (source code;
the versions available in the ’net will be synched later
automatically) with the new mailing list.
