No. Actually, McKusick's book on 4.4BSD even states (preface, p. ix) it is not intended as an introductory book to OS's. Personally, I borrowed Silberschatz from a friend of mine who used it for one of his courses. I suppose the choice between Tanenbaum or Silberschatz is a matter of personal preference, as I find both books quite good.
