reliability is not an issue with them (so far) we have installed about 10 of them over the past year or so without a single problem with the via motherboard or network interfaces - well for that matter no problem at all. The only thing to get is a decent case and powersupply (travla do a very nice one with a solid 70/90/120 watt powersupply option) they do a slim line case with a pci riser so u can add a wifi card and make it an AP as well.

my main issue is speed and dont seem to be able to push more than
about 40mbit of traffic through them.

My feeling as well. Another factor is that you can swap out the memory for something bigger if need be. I am a bit less happy about the unnecessary bumpf, like the sound controller. I wish Via would make a board with IDE or CF, VGA, four ethernet controllers and nothing else (OK, maybe serial).

I am not 100% happy with the onboard vr? interfaces but in most places i=20 am using them as firewalls and very few of my client have anything faster= =20 than 8mbit internet connection.

Is the reason for your unhappyness just speed or are there any driver or reliability issues? I am not concerned about raw network speed for a firewall either, but unreliability would be a bummer.
