In many cases I talked to people those who chose Linux instead of OpenBSD for firewalls it was just because there is no UPnP support. yes Just because of that. The prefer OpenBSD's security but they are wanting to have functionality not provided by OpenBSD. http://seclists.org/lists/firewall-wizards/2005/May/0150.html This not true for the majority though The firm I work for switched from OpenBSD firewall and ran a Linux firewall for 2 days because the new Internet connection scheme required a client program to run and it gave a segmentation fault whilr running under OpenBSD's Linux emulation. 2 days and both the Linux Firewall and Internet connection were abandoned and OpenBSD 3.7 took charge again :-) its sometimes a choice between Security and Functionality that forces people to choose Linux than OpenBSD. I am Glad my firm chose Security :-) Another factor is that though almost all OpenBSD users know the existence of Linux there are many, many, many, Linux Users who donot have even heard about BSD's let alone OpenBSD. Also one of the reasons for people prefering Linux instead of OpenBSD is that they get support easily. Without much effort they can somehow get things done because people are willing to spoon feed new users. For OpenBSD you have to put in effort to learn how to use it. I learned the Basics of TCP/IP networking only after started using OpenBSD though I have used Linux before. It took me actually about 5 months to get my first firewall decently installed even with the man pages and FAQ and help from great guys who use it.( its true that I also had a limiting disease that caused problem in concentrating and loss of memory, otherwise I might have accomplished a bit more early, after taking medicines I am better off now). Now I can get the same setup in less than an hour :-)!!! Big thanks to all who helped :-)) I strongly beleive that by spreading the word and by educating people about this OS you can get many people switch from Linux or other OS to OpenBSD. I am writing this from another firm which just decided to use OpenBSD instead of Linux to secure their network :-) They are currently using ICS on Windows98 and wanted more security. If I had not told them about OpenBSD. They would have gone for Linux or if someone recommended for a proprietry firewall then for that one :-) Kind Regards Siju
